welcome to the sydney cabaret competition
We’re proud to present the first annual Sydney Cabaret Competition in 2019.
Our aim is to find and foster cabaret superstars.
Cabaret has a rich history in Australia - and this competition follows in the remarkable footsteps of our friends at Your Management International and The Australian Cabaret Showcase, who discovered a decade of artists who’ve all gone on to brighter futures in the industry, including Tom Sharah, Melody Beck, Alexis Fishman, Toby Francis, Sheridan Harbridge, Marika Aubrey and Gillian Cosgriff.
Cabaret is a funny beast - we know it combines any mixture of singing, drama, performance, comedy or art - but executed perfectly, leaves the audience wondering if ‘cabaret’ can really be defined if each performance is so different.
It can be about anything - relationships, memoir, satire, politics, sex, aliens?
Which is why it’s our privilege to find…excuse our lack of a more unique phrase….Australia’s next Cabaret Star and first annual winner of the Sydney Cabaret Competition.
Producer, Archery Productions
The search begins for Australia’s Best Cabaret Star, who could win a career changing prize – including the opportunity to perform at Sydney’s favourite cabaret venues, cash prizes and expert support to bring a show to the stage.
Applications are now open until 26 May 2019 (extended by one week), which gives entrants plenty of time to apply and consider what original 8-minute ‘cabaret concept’ they’ll perform, if invited to participate in the competition, spaces are limited.
HEATS: sundays June 16, June 23 and June 30
Following a review of all applicants, contestants will be allocated into 1 of 3 heats where a winner, a runner up and an audience choice will be awarded and will progress to the final.
Tickets are on sale for each heat and the contestants will be announced for each heat by 29 May 2019. (Tickets are $20 pre-sale, $25 door sale).
The final will be run on Wednesday 10 July 2019, at the Sydney Cabaret Festival. A panel of judges and special guest performers will pick a winner and runner-up, and the audience will also choose a winner on the night.
The final will be held at the Seymour Centre, Chippendale.
Tickets will be sold through the festival here.
